The End of an Era TSM's Legacy in the LCS

One of the biggest names in esports history, Team SoloMid (TSM), has officially announced its withdrawal from the League Championship Series (LCS), the North American League of Legends league. The organization has sold its spot to Shopify Rebellion, which will compete as one of the franchised teams starting in the 2024 season. The news was confirmed on both organizations’ social media channels and marks the end of an era for TSM, which for over a decade was one of the powerhouses of the LCS. Founded in 2009, TSM built a legendary trajectory in the competitive scene, winning numerous regional titles and representing North America in international tournaments.

The announcement comes after TSM CEO Andy Dinh revealed on May 20th his intention to leave the North American championship. According to him, the decision was part of a global repositioning strategy for the organization, which seeks to compete in a more competitive and financially sustainable environment. “We’re very proud of everything we’ve built in the LCS and grateful to all the fans who have followed us on this journey. But we feel the time has come to seek new challenges. TSM will continue competing in League of Legends, but in a different tier-1 region,” Dinh stated.

The End of an Era: TSM’s Legacy in the LCS

TSM’s departure represents one of the most significant changes in the recent history of the League Championship Series. Since its debut in the competitive scene, the organization was one of the most responsible for popularizing League of Legends in North America and solidifying the region’s audience. With legendary players like Bjergsen, Doublelift, Hauntzer, Svenskeren, and Biofrost, TSM dominated the league for years. The team won seven LCS titles, including memorable victories in 2014, 2016, and 2017, and became known for its historic rivalry with Cloud9, which produced some of the league’s most iconic series.

Even after its golden era, TSM remained relevant, but has faced a decline in performance in recent years. Difficulties adapting to the competitive meta, constant roster changes, and financial difficulties within the league have affected results.

TSM plans global expansion and a new future in LoL

The LCS franchise model itself, implemented in 2018, has faced criticism for failing to retain viewership and competitiveness, leading some traditional organizations to reevaluate its continued presence. TSM’s departure, therefore, symbolizes not only the end of a phase for the team, but also reflects the transformations in the North American esports ecosystem. Still, TSM’s legacy remains undisputed. For over ten years, the team was the face of the LCS and a symbol of the growth of the Western competitive scene.

Millions of fans followed its trajectory, which helped shape League of Legends as one of the most popular esports in the world. With TSM’s departure, Shopify Rebellion, a Canadian organization known for its teams in Valorant, StarCraft II, Dota 2, and Call of Duty, officially becomes the new LCS slot holder. Rebellion’s entry is seen as an attempt to revitalize the North American scene, which seeks to attract new investment and regain audience interest. In an official statement, Shopify Rebellion stated that it sees the acquisition as an opportunity for growth and to reinforce its commitment to the esports ecosystem. “Joining the LCS is a natural step for our organization. We want to bring energy, innovation, and a new competitive mindset to the North American League of Legends scene,” the team stated.

TSM plans global expansion and a new future in LoL

Although the LCS exit marks the end of a historic chapter, TSM is far from abandoning League of Legends. According to CEO Andy Dinh, the organization intends to invest in another tier-1 league, which means the team could join regional championships such as the LCK (South Korea), LEC (Europe), or LPL (China) — the three largest and most competitive in the world.

Sources close to the team indicate that TSM has already begun preliminary talks with international partners to secure entry into a new league in 2024. The decision reflects the organization’s ambition to compete at the highest level and regain the global prestige that marked its history. Furthermore, TSM will continue to be present in other sports, such as Apex Legends, Valorant, Dota 2, Rainbow Six Siege, and Fortnite, maintaining its status as one of the largest and most diverse esports organizations in the world. For fans, the news brings a mix of nostalgia and anticipation. Although TSM has officially left the LCS, the promise of a return in a new competitive landscape keeps the flame of one of the most iconic brands in esports alive.
